Drug Testing For Welfare Recipients To Begin

Millions of people in the United States depend on the government for assistance with food and medical coverage for themselves and their families. In recent years, there has been a call from conservative politicians for recipients of welfare to undergo drug testing to qualify for heir benefits. The thought process is, if the people receiving welfare have enough money to pay for drugs, they should have enough to pay for food and other necessities. This philosophy is being tested out in select states in the nation such as Montana and Colorado. In Montana, a bill has been proposed to test welfare recipients who have a history of drug abuse. The bill, House Bill 200, will require for applicants to the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) to fill out a questionnaire indicating if they have a history of drug abuse. That applicant would then have to take a drug test if the reviewer of the application deemed they had a drug problem. A positive test would mean that the applicant would submit to a 30-day treatment program in order to receive assistance. If someone refuses to fill out the questionnaire, they will be refused assistance. A similar program has been proposed in El Paso County, Colorado. In this scenario, welfare recipients will be tested if they are under the suspicion of using drugs. The Department of Human Services there says that the department’s main goal is to help people find housing and jobs and drug testing will help them to identify those in the programread more

Pregnant Women Sentenced to Jail

Last year Tennessee became the first state to make doing drugs while pregnant a crime. Obama’s czar, drug addiction counselors, and doctors do not believe threatening pregnant women with imprisonment will help treat their condition. It will make the situation more stressful and, as a result, the women will result back to drugs. The punishment for pregnant mothers who chose to do narcotic drugs while pregnant is imprisonment for up to 15 years. Since July women have been charged with assault and placed into treatment programs after being imprisoned. Investigators have revealed the shocking truth about pregnant women since this law was implemented. The women are afraid to receive prenatal care in fear that they will be arrested or punished. Just like indulging in narcotics, the absence of prenatal care can cause harm to the unborn child. Some women have gone as far as skipping state to give birth in order to avoid the consequences. Jamillah Falls is the second woman to get arrested for using narcotics while pregnant. When Falls gave birth her newborn baby tested positive for heroin. As a result of her newborn testing positive Falls served a six-month sentence according to WREG. Alternet was informed by the Shelby County Prosecutor’s Office that Falls failed to meet the guidelines of her probation. According to the founder of the reproductive rights group SisterReach, Falls had a difficult time while enrolled in her treatment program. Has was reportedly stressed out about being away from her baby and the criminal charge that still remains andread more

Trusted Travelers Used As Drug Mules?

Trusted travelers are now being used as drug mules. Drug mules are defined as people who transport drugs across international borders. These travelers were granted the “trusted” status by the U.S. government. Drug smugglers are now placing powerful magnets under their vehicles in Mexico. After securing the containers, the illegal cargo is obtained away from the view of the border of authorities in the United States. Containers were spotted by a motorist on January 12th while pumping gas. The motorist was under the impression that the containers were bombs. After reporting it to the authorities, police officers recovered 13.2 pounds of heroin from under the car. According to San Diego Police, the drugs were packaged inside six magnetized cylinders. Certain details of the case have yet to be reported, but it’s confirmed that the driver came through a “trusted travelers” lane to smuggle in the heroin. In San Diego, at least three more incidents have occurred involving drivers in the SENTRI program. In 2009, there were 5.9 million vehicle crossings, in 2013, the number of vehicle crossings more than doubled at 12.6 million. SENTRI enables thousands of people to bypass inspectors avoiding issues such as traffic. By enrolling in the SENTRI, travel time can be reduced by approximately two hours. Travelers potentially become targets making it difficult for police officials to believe the drugs were planted and leading them to believe they are drug mules. How do smugglers know who to target? Travelers who park their car for long periods of time and plan to travelread more

CBS Commentator Hit Up Backpage For Prostitute

Backpage is a kinda known spot where people go for loving. It is similar to Craigslist in set up, except most people aren’t going there for jobs or to shop for cheap items. Backpage has a section devoted to escorts where men and women post their services for people who may be looking for company. Most are coded in a way as to not arouse law enforcement. However, sometimes, police outfits set up stings to nail potential johns looking for a good time. Now former CBS analyst and former NBA star point guard, Greg Anthony was caught up in such a sting earlier this month, and the details are now coming to light. It turns out, DC undercover officers were responding to complaints of prostitution activity on the 1500 block of Rhode Island Ave in northwest DC according to charging documents submitted to the DC Superior Court. Anthony responded to an ad posted on Backpage by an undercover officer for the Human Trafficking Unit. He was in DC to call a University of Maryland game against Michigan State. The officer arrived at Anthony’s room at a Doubletree Hotel and, after some negotiations, Anthony agreed to pay $80 for sex with the woman. At this point, the officer signaled for the arrest team to move in and Anthony was apprehended. He was charged with misdemeanor solicitation for prostitution.
