Smart cards are the new wave. Now, in addition to swiping your card to make purchases, recent technology has introduced the “wave and pay” system which allows you to simply wave your credit cards over a detector to make a purchase. However, criminal hackers have adapted to this new way of shopping and can usurp your credit card information if they are in the vicinity when it is used. The credit cards can do this using RFID chips that are embedded into them. The cards use radio frequencies and the frequencies of the cards is in such a range that they can be detected from a centimeter to a meter (roughly two feet) away. Currently, hackers can only obtain your credit card number and expiration date through this means. As it stands, the three digit CVV security number needed to complete online purchases is safe. However, skilled hackers can load stolen numbers and expiration dates into dummy credit cards and use them at point-of-sale locations where CVV numbers are not required. This is a concern, because RFID radio tags are being put into passports and employee badges. This is even more dangerous because these documents hold more personal information. With employee badges, if cloned, they can be used to gain access into secure buildings and areas. There is only one known means of protection against hackers looking to hack into your credits cards. This method is called the “Faraday Cage.” This means lining your pocket and/or wallet with aluminum foil or a similar substance. [TECHread more

It seems police departments like the LAPD and NYPD just can’t seem to stay out of the news. Far too often, these departments come up in stories of brutality against Black people and have been on the receiving end of the ire of protesters demonstrating against their misconduct. The LAPD is the subject here after one of their officers shot and injured a 15-year-old over a toy gun. On Tuesday, two LAPD officers were patrolling when they spotted a group of teens in an alley. One of the teens was pointing a replica gun at another person, according to reports. The officers demanded that the teen drop the gun. He allegedly didn’t comply and one of the officers opened fire on the group. The teen holding the gun was not hit, but his friend standing next to him was struck. The officers detained all of the teens, but concluded that they were indeed all friends. They were declared “no animus,” meaning “a crime was committed, the person will not be accountable and he/she will be considered innocent.” This designation is usually made for minors and people with mental illness. However, the individual holding the replica gun may face charges of brandishing a replica weapon in front of a police officer. The names of the LAPD officers involved are expected to be released after the initial 72-hour briefing of the incident. The department has pulled the officers from the field pending the department’s initial review. There is no report of the injured teen’s condition. [LA TIMES]

NYPD officer Peter Liang has pleaded not guilty to charges of manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, second-degree assault and two counts of official misconduct for the shooting death of 28-year-old father Akai Gurley in a Brooklyn housing complex. The shooting came on the heals of Eric Garner’s death in November of last year, and has been a contributing factor to nonviolent protests across the nation. Liang and his partner were patrolling the Louis Pink Houses in East New York due to an increase in violent crime in the housing complex. The tandem walked into the pitch dark building making their way to the eighth floor where Akai Gurley and a female friend were waiting for an elevator that was not operating correctly. Gurley stepped away to take the stairs. Liang had his gun drawn along with a flashlight. Once he opened the door, he fired a shot. The bullet hit Gurley and traveled through his heart, diaphragm and liver, killing him. Liang and his partner were flustered and didn’t call in the shooting for four minutes. Kim Ballinger, Gurley’s domestic partner, has filed notices of claim against the city of New York and its Housing Authority. She is seeking a total of $50 million for the death of Akai Gurley. Liang faces prison time for his blunder. The manslaughter charge alone carries a potential 15 year sentence. Mayor Bill de Blasio said of the situation, “The only thing we know for sure is there was a human tragedy involving Mr. Gurley. He’s gone. I spent time with his domestic partner andread more
