YMCMB Artist Jay Sean is full of surprises. The London boy stopped by the GIANT offices to promote his fourth studio album “Neon.” Although known for his pop hits like “Down”, the singer/songwriter took it back to his R&B roots that his international fans know him best for.
With the full support of Baby and Slim, Jay Sean teamed up with producers Pharrell, OFM and Brian Kennedy to make what he calls is a “cohesive R&B” album. We chopped it up about everything from his crazed groupies to the great advice Mary J. Blige gave him. We only had about seven minutes, but it was the best Quickie of my life!
What did you do with your first big check?
That would’ve been 10 years ago when I first got my deal and I did what every other 21-year-old would do I bought a car. I bought a M3 BMW Convertible. That was fun.
What is the best piece of advice anyone in this industry has given you?
You know what, it’s so funny because I got some great advice from Mary J.Blige, I did a song with her a while ago. At the video shoot. She was singing out loud as if it were a concert while doing the video and I looked at her and said ‘Wow, you’re really singing. You can easily lip sync.’ and she said “No, you gotta sing that sh*t. That’s the only way the emotion will come through on camera.’ That really stuck with me.
What’s your craziest or most ridiculous groupie story?
There are some psychotic ones. One girl, I was doing a tour in Australia and she came to every show and she was right in the front, which means she had to get on a plane each time to six different cities. On the last show, she decided to come on stage during my performance, and jump on my back and basically had me in a choke hold! The security grabbed her and threw her out. After the show she was waiting by the car and she had an envelope. In the envelope was her passport, the keys to her car and house. She also made a photo album and had taken pictures of me from the Internet and stuck my head on different pictures of me, her and our baby. Yeah, we had a whole family!
North West or Blue Ivy, who would you babysit?
Oh Blue Ivy. 100%.
Any celebrity crushes?
I mean the usuals. The usual hotties that anyone would say. I love thick girls. I don’t like these skinny girls, that’s not me, a girl with a nice ass. That’s me all day.
