Summer Madness was…different this year
For the Ultimate Rap League, following up a legendary event like Summer Madness 2 was destined to be a difficult task. After bringing back legends like Serius Jones, Iron Solomon, and Murder Mook and putting them up against the current battle rap forerunners like Charlie Clips and T-Rex, all eyes were on URL the moment Spring turned to Summer in 2013. However, from the start it seemed Summer Madness 3 was fraught with bad juju. There were late announcements, no promotion, bickering about the card, aspersions cast against URL from their own top battlers and most notably, an absence of the Loaded Lux vs. Hollow Da Don, the battle fans most wanted to see. Nonetheless, when Sunday Sept 8th finally rolled around, it seemed there might be redemption for Summer Madness 3. Sure it had it’s problems: central booking-style searches that delayed the event 4 hours, food shortages and no re-entry into the venue, but the match ups of supposed “hungry battlers” made for a good show. Three battles had yet to take place when midnight rolled around. The third to last battle, Math Hoffa vs. Serius Jones was set to take place. As folks waited for Serius to take the stage, audience members witnessed a verbal altercation between Serius Jones and URL head E.Beasely. Finally, Serius entered stage left with three topless women, donning body paint. Confusion ensued and hungry fans failed to re-act to the first round of the battle. According to Jones, his original intro would have cleared up any confusion but apparently, Serius was notified just before the battle that the intro video he was asked to produce, couldn’t be played. He was told furthermore that his round time was to be shorter than originally discussed, hence his altercation with Beasely. The crowd was tired and hungry, reacting little to either performance. When Math Hoffa began, he seemed to be eliciting slightly more energy from the crowd than his opponent. After one of Hoffa’s bars there was a notable lack of response. Serius mocked Hoffa with a Rick Flair-esque “Wooooo.” His naked entourage the empty moment with a quick twerk and then, the venue erupted. A quick punch to the face by Math Hoffa. Serius stumbled backwards. Hoffa continued to hook the veteran rapper in the face as he went down. Finally the two were separated and the venue was shut down. Three battles had failed to take place. Serius Jones presented his side of the story to Vlad.TV and recently posted his unheard rounds for the battle.
Here, we talk to Math Hoffa about what went down at Summer Madness 3.
